A Prayer about Restored Fortunes

A Prayer about Restored Fortunes

Heavenly Father,

It might be today.

It might be tomorrow.

It might be next year.

It might take longer.

But all of us will one day have our mouths

filled with laughter

and our tongues wagging with shouts of joy (Psalm 126:2).

You have already returned us to yourself

through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ,

but one day, you will finish restoring our fortunes.

In that day, you will free us forever from captivity to sin;

You will restore us to yourself fully and forever.

We will laugh and hug and dance

and work and praise you

as you always planned for us to do.

Encourage our hearts today

with a lovely vision of that day.

In Jesus’ restoring name. Amen.

Read Psalm 126.

A Prayer about the Beauty God Created

A Prayer about the Beauty God Created

Majestic Creator,

Open our eyes to the beauty of your earth—

may we see the green herons with their long plum necks,

the silly sandpipers with their spiky beaks,

the slimy armadillo with their creepy claws

and know that “All your works are good!”

Even as we notice the earthly beauty you’ve created,

may we be deeply humbled

that you created us in your image

and crowned us with glory and honor.

Even though we have sinned against you,

you care for us, you are mindful of us,

you are more than mindful of us—

you have sent your Son to save us

and to restore us to your loving embrace.

How majestic indeed is your name in all the earth!

In Jesus’ glorious name. Amen.

Read Psalm 8.

A Prayer about Manic Mondays

A Prayer about Manic Mondays

Heavenly King,

We confess,

too many of our Mondays are “manic”

because we don’t still ourselves before you

and remember

that you are God,

you are King,

you are Lord.

Too often, we serve little-l lords

like bosses, children, friends, family, or to-do lists.

We serve them,

trying to win their approval

or trying to prove we are winners.

Turn our faces toward you.

Bow our hearts before you.

Send us into this world this week to serve you,

loving you and loving others

as you have empowered us to do.

As we do so,

may our Mondays go from manic to magnificent.

In Jesus’ magnificent name. Amen.

Read Psalm 46:1-11.

A Prayer about Being Kept and Blessed

A Prayer about Being Kept and Blessed

Merciful Lord,

This Sabbath day,

we thank you for the many ways

you have blessed and kept us:

You have blessed us

with faithful churches and ministers

who preach the good news about Jesus.

You have kept us

with your guiding and guarding Word

and with wise friends

who bring us good counsel.

You have made your face to shine

your grace and saving love upon our hearts

as surely as the spring sun warms our faces.

You have shone your glory over us

and soothed us with your peace,

making us whole again.

Now send us out as mirrors

of your glory and grace,

reflecting your love

to all we meet this week,

bringing your saving and keeping light and love

into a dark and gloomy world.

In Jesus’ gracious name.

Amen.

A Prayer about Grieving with Hope

A Prayer about Grieving with Hope

Comforting God,

How kind your Word is—

you know that we will grieve when we lose loved ones,

and you don’t tell us not to grieve.

and yet, you remind us

that Jesus gives us every reason to hope for a brighter day

even as we grieve.

For we know that our loved ones lost to death

are now with you if they trusted in you in this life.

You told the thief on the cross,

“Today, you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

Yes, much about death and resurrection remains a mystery,

but this much we know:

one day, all who trust in Christ will be with you forever,

bodies and souls fully restored.

Oh, Lord, how we look forward to that day.

A Prayer for When We’re Afraid

A Prayer for When We’re Afraid

Faithful Lord,

Thank you for your compassion for our fearfulness.

Today, we bring our fears to you:

When we are afraid

that we will fail at work, at school, as caregivers

[name any failures you fear],

we put our trust in you.

When we are afraid

that we have made the wrong decisions

for our children, for our loved ones, about our business, in our lives

[name any wrong decisions you fear],

we put our trust in you.

When we are afraid

that our health or the health of a loved one

will not improve

[name any health fears you have],

we put our trust in you.

When we are afraid

that we will lose our job or won’t find one soon

[name any fears about provision you have],

we put our trust in you.

Father, you know all of our fears,

and you invite us to bring them to you.

As we do so, calm our hearts and minds

in the sure hope of your kind provision.

In Jesus’ trustworthy name. Amen.

Read Psalm 56:1-13.
