A Prayer about Learning Christ

A Prayer about Learning Christ

Lord Jesus,

Thank you for this compelling invitation

to your classroom:

You are the best teacher.

You don’t worry with reading, writing, and arithmetic,

and you may never produce Jeopardy champions,

But you do change us completely.

You are making us new,

into people who will be like you

when we see you face to face,

as you really are (Revelation 21:5; 1 John 3:2).

You are making us into gentle and lowly people,

people who get angry about injustice and oppression and abuse,

people who speak the truth in love,

people who humble ourselves

to forgive those who sin against us.

Lord, today and everyday,

make our highest goal to be “learning Christ,”

that we may discover the deepest rest for our souls.

In your gentle name. Amen.

A Prayer about the Lord’s Hospitality

A Prayer about the Lord’s Hospitality

Gracious and Hospitable Lord,

You know we’ve been struggling to figure out what to do—

It’s the first year in five

that we won’t be at my mom’s for Thanksgiving.

Her home now belongs to another;

her new home is in heaven with you.

I know many face a similar sorrow.

It will be their first holiday without their loved one.

In a season when we may feel exiled from familiar places,

draw our hearts to your ever-present

and always abundant hospitality.

You make homes for sparrows and nests for swallows (Psalm 84:3),

and you have invited us to be your sons and daughters.

Even as we limp through the Valley of Weeping,

You make it a place of springs (Psalm 84:6),

refreshing our hearts with your gentleness and joy.

When we tend to believe the lie that we are bereft,

remind us that you are our “sun and shield,”

bestowing “favor and honor”,

assuring us, “No good thing

do I withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11).

In the name of your Son,

who came to walk this earth with us

that we might live in heaven with you.

Amen.

Read Psalm 84.

A Prayer for When Someone Harms Us

A Prayer for When Someone Harms Us

Father God,

It’s hard to know how to react when someone

deliberately harms, betrays, or abuses us.

Thank you for reminding us

through the story of Joseph,

whose story foreshadows

the true story of our Savior,

that even brutal betrayal by loved ones

can be redeemed for your good purposes.

Help us to bring all of our tears and pain to you,

because you care about them.

Help us to trace your redemption

through the harm we have suffered.

And help us to pray for those who persecute us,

that they might bow before you

and know full and freeing forgiveness.

In Jesus’ redeeming name. Amen.

Read Genesis 50:20; Psalm 109:21-31.

A Prayer for Confessing Our Sins

A Prayer for Confessing Our Sins

Merciful Father,

As our Bible study considered David’s abuse of power

 against Bathsheba this week,

we were reminded again of the importance of regular confession.

When we make confession a part of our daily prayer,

it’s harder to allow a sin that begins with a fleeting thought

to multiply into many and monstrous sins.

David, the anointed King of Israel stayed home from battle,

looked at Bathsheba bathing,

decided he wanted her for his own

(even though she was the wife of his war buddy, Uriah),

took her, impregnated her,

tried to cover the sin,

 then when that failed,

murdered his faithful defender, Uriah.

We recognize ourselves in this sin.

Like David, you have generously,

extravagantly blessed us

with your grace and your provision,

and yet we have reached for what is not ours.

Though we may not have committed physical murder,

we have murdered others in our thoughts or words or deeds,

perhaps lied to cover a failure or sin or insecurity.

Because we know the darkness of our hearts,

we come to you, Lord,

seeking mercy,

saying with David,

“Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy,

blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin” (Psalm 51:1-2).

Thank you that we can come to you confidently,

knowing that in Jesus,

you have heard our prayer

and forgiven us our sin.

In his cleansing name we pray. Amen.

Read Psalm 51.

A Prayer about Light in Dark Days

A Prayer about Light in Dark Days

Son of Righteousness,

In these dark and distressing days,

many are feeling the  “gloom of anguish”—

grief over lost loved ones;

sorrow over meanness and division,

weariness over work frustrations…

In this stark dark season,

we embrace the good news

Isaiah gave people long long ago.

Isaiah promised a brilliant light

would shine into the darkness

of the Israelites’ captivity.

We have seen this light,

the “life that was the light of men” (John 1:4),

You are the “light that darkness cannot overcome” (John 1:5).

You make our burdens light

by shouldering our sin

and throwing off our oppressors (Isaiah 9:4).

You instill peace in our hearts

by burning the weapons of war

and restoring order to chaos and confusion (Isaiah 9:5).

You shine glory into the cosmos

from your everlasting crown

which rules over nations

and draws multitudes to bow before you (Isaiah 9:3,7).

Sun of Righteousness,

draw our eyes to the horizon of hope,

that we may see you rising

with healing in your wings (Malachi 4:2).

In your light and life-giving name. Amen.

Read Isaiah 9:1-7; John 1:1-18.
