What’s on your mind and heart this Mother’s Day?
“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” Isaiah 66:13
Heavenly Father,
On this Mother’s Day,
We come to you with many emotions,
many memories.
Some of us remember fondly the mother
who birthed us or adopted us,
making cookies,
doing homework,
modeling life as a working mom.
Others remember growing up without much mothering,
because a mother’s presence was denied—
whether through death, illness, addiction, or work.
Some long to be a mother;
others long for their adult children
to remember them on this day
set aside for honoring mothers.
Wherever we find ourselves this day,
may we honor you,
who though primarily called yourself “Father” in Scripture,
often compared yourself to a mother:
You never forget your nursing child
or your teenage son;
you persevere
even when your children wander far (See Isaiah 49:15).
You teach your children to walk in love,
and when they stumble in sin,
you heal them through your mercy and compassion;
you fed them with manna from heaven
as you feed us the Bread of Life in Jesus (See Hosea 11:3-4).
You gave birth to all of us
who are your spiritual children
by sending your own sinless Son
to die on a Cross for our sins,
by raising him from the dead,
in order to raise us to new life in Christ (See Colossians 2:12; Romans 6:4).
Thank you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
for the motherly care you always show us.
Encourage our hearts with that care this Mother’s Day
that we might show your comfort and steadfast love
to those who desperately need it.
Amen.
