Do you need help remembering the all-powerful God when your life feels chaotic?
Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters, yet your footprints were unseen. Psalm 77:19
All-mighty God,
We confess, like Asaph,
in chaotic circumstances,
in significant suffering,
we are often so “troubled we cannot speak,”
and when we remember you, we “moan” (See Ps. 77:3, 4).
Even as we cry out to you,
our ambivalence shows—
we believe you will hear us (Ps. 77:1),
but within moments, we doubt your love,
questioning, “Has his steadfast love forever ceased…
Has God forgotten to be gracious?” (Ps. 77:8-9).
But then, your counseling Spirit jogs our memory—
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your wonders of old” (Ps. 77:11).
“You are the God who works wonders” (Psalm. 77:14).
You are the God who saved an entire nation,
your chosen people, the Israelites,
by making a path through the roaring, frightening waters.
Indeed, the word “sea” in the Bible
should not make us think of a holiday by the shore
but rather of chaotic, untamable, destructive power.
And when the waters looked at you, they trembled (Ps. 77:16).
In the same way, when our terrifying enemies see you,
they quake.
You are the holy and powerful God
who rules over all creation.
You are the holy and powerful God
who rescues us again and again
in ways we could never fathom.
Today, in our fear and sorrow,
help us to see you delivering,
even where “your footprints were unseen.”
In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.
Read Psalm 77.
