Lord Jesus,
As we sing advent songs like “In the Bleak Midwinter,”
and as many of us feel the bleakness of this past year,
we rejoice in the truth of poet Christina Rosetti’s words:
“Our God, heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain,
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty —
Jesus Christ.”
Indeed, you have come to reign.
And in your birth in a stable place,
you have given us abundant reason for rejoicing.
We look forward to the day you will come again
and wipe away every reason for weeping.
In your joy-full name. Amen.
