A Prayer about Telling the World about God’s Glory

A Prayer about Telling the World about God’s Glory

Glorious God,

As your people worldwide gather today,

Unite us in your marvelous mission for us—

to tell the world about your glory!

Dissolve our trust in idols,

the things of this earth

that often consume our thoughts and energies,

things that deceive us,

“If only I had…

obedient kids,

a better job,

a spouse,

enough money…”

life would be good.

[Name some “If only’s that sometimes deceive you.]

These are the idols

of “silver and gold,

the work of human hands” (Psalm 115:4).

May your astounding glory—

your majesty, your might, your mercy—

so humble us, so overwhelm us,

that we can do nothing

but rave about it to everyone we meet.

May we tell people “The Lord has remembered us,”

stunned even as we say it.

[Name some ways the Lord has remembered you.]

May we tell people,

“The Lord…is our help and our shield’ (Psalm 115:10);

of course we “trust in the Lord” (Psalm 115:12, 10, 9).

[Name some ways the Lord has helped you and been your shield.]

In Jesus’ glorious name. Amen.

A Prayer about Blessing the Lord at All Times

A Prayer about Blessing the Lord at All Times

Gracious Lord,

We join David today in proclaiming your goodness:

May we bless you at all times—

times when we’ve acted supremely foolish,

times when we are crushed in spirit,

times when we are lost and afraid,

not just times when you’ve blessed us

with a new car

or a new boyfriend

or a new job.

In all times,

may we share our uncontainable awe

at your greatness.

For indeed, with David we can affirm,

We sought you, and you answered us,

And delivered us from all our fears—

fears of being rejected by our friends or family,

fears of illness and death,

fears of being unimportant or irrelevant (Psalm 34:4).

As we take in your glory,

something amazing happens—

our faces begin to radiate with your dazzling light,

and where we would have previously hidden in shame,

We now turn that fiery light outward,

and shame shrivels and withers away.

Oh, Lord, indeed, we bless your name.

You have saved us from all our fear and shame.

In Jesus’ praiseworthy name. Amen.

A Prayer about Seeing Our Salvation

A Prayer about Seeing Our Salvation

Merciful God,

As we revisit this scene between Simeon

and the eight-day-old Jesus,

we pray you would write in us stories like Simeon’s:

Filled with the Holy Spirit…

Made righteous by Christ…

Waiting for your consolation…

Watching for our Savior…

Seeing him as our one and only salvation…

Illuminating his glory to all the peoples…

Believing that he alone makes us ready to die in peace.

Knowing our Savior has come,

may we wait with confident hope

for the day he will come again

and restore us to himself.

Amen.
