A Prayer about Thanking God for Ministry Leaders

A Prayer about Thanking God for Ministry Leaders

Powerful God,

Thank you for the ministers of the gospel

you have called to your work.

Thank you for their willingness

to “share in suffering for the gospel,”

and that you empower them to do so.

No one could endure the kind of suffering

your ministers endure

unless they were empowered by you,

motivated by the reality

that you “saved [them] and called [them] to a holy calling,”

not because of their works,

“but because of [your] own purpose and grace,

which [you] gave us in Christ before the ages began…” (2 Timothy 1:9).

Lord, may we in the body of Christ

see the suffering our pastors and ministry leaders endure,

and may we support them

and love them

and pray for them

and serve them

as a way of worshiping you,

the mighty and loving God

who sent them to share

the profoundly good news of the gospel with us:

that Jesus has appeared and “abolished death”

and “brought life and immortality to light” (2 Timothy 1:10-11).

In Jesus’ suffering name. Amen.

Read 2 Timothy 1:8-14.

Friends, I encourage you to take a few minutes to thank God specifically for the people who minister the gospel to you. Pray for them and consider how you can support them.

A Prayer about Giving Thanks in A Fallen World

A Prayer about Giving Thanks in A Fallen World

Good Father,

We confess that sometimes

this command seems impossible to obey.

How do we give thanks

when we feel immersed in the fallenness

of this broken world,

in our own sin,

in the harm caused by others’ sin,

in the pain and suffering

of racism, unemployment,

betrayal, mental illness, sickness, death…?

It helps to remember that the apostle Paul,

by whose hand you scrawled these words,

knew suffering:

imprisonments, shipwreck, beatings,

betrayal, poverty, mockery,

and other miseries (2 Corinthians 11:24-29).

And yet, he was able to write these words:

“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed;

perplexed, but not driven to despair;

persecuted, but not forsaken;

struck down, but not destroyed…” (2 Corinthians 4:8).

What did Paul see that we need to see?

He saw that as he suffered,

more people saw the grace of Jesus Christ and more people saw your dazzling glory:

“For it is all for your sake,

so that as grace extends to more and more people

it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God” (2 Corinthians 4:15).

Whether we are in a season of joy or affliction,

may we give thanks with Paul—

your grace and glory are growing,

in our lives, and in the lives of others.

In Jesus’ gracious name. Amen.

A Prayer about the One Thing We Need

A Prayer about the One Thing We Need

Lord Jesus,

Bread of life; manna from heaven,

Forgive us when we are like the grumbling people in this story,

people who have just been fed a filling feast

you produced out of two fish and five loaves

and who now clamor for more miracles.

Open our eyes to see that you are the miracle,

you are the one thing we need.

We don’t need tricks and magic shows,

we need the miracle of redemption,

a Savior sent from heaven to feed us

the food that fully satisfies,

to fill us with the living water that quenches our thirst.

May we see that you are real,

that while we can’t physically eat you like a piece of bread,

we can fully partake of you,

moment by moment,

through your Word, by your Spirit.

Help us to see that when we fully take you in,

you satisfy our deepest longings—

for love, for peace,

for hope, for trust,

for forgiveness, for healing.

In your very real name. Amen.

A Prayer about Caring for the Mentally Ill

A Prayer about Caring for the Mentally Ill

Comforting Father,

We lift up all who are affected by mental illness.

Sadly, because of our ignorance about mental illness,

many of the mentally ill suffer “secondary wounds.”

Both the afflicted and their families have suffered

quick-fix by faith cures,

condemnation of behavior,

or exile from the body.

As we look to our Lord Jesus,

who came alongside the mentally afflicted

and often healed but always cared,

make us more like him.

Help us to be sensitive,

to consider the context of suffering,

to listen well,

to remember the hope we have to offer—

the incarnate, resurrected, and ascended Christ

will one day come again

to redeem and restore all broken bodies.

How we ache for that day.

In Christ’s restoring name. Amen.

A Prayer about the Word That Revives Our Soul

A Prayer about the Word That Revives Our Soul

Author God,

You have written the one true story

that gives us everything we need

for life and breath.

Thank you for the remarkable Psalm 119

which reminds us of the many reasons

we have to cling to your word

even when our souls “cling to the dust” (Psalm 119:25):

Your word counsels and clarifies,

lighting our way

when we walk in darkness (Psalm 119:104).

Your word stabilizes and secures,

revealing your steadfast love and faithfulness (Psalm 119:75-77).

Your word saves and delivers,

acting as our “refuge and shield”

against “evil-minded people” (Psalm 119:114-115).

Your word restores and revives us,

filling us with hope when we are afflicted

and raising us to new life

when we are groveling in the dust (Psalm 119:49, 25).

Grow in us a love and longing for your word,

that we may love you and love others.

In the name of the Word-Made-Flesh, Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Read Psalm 119.
